The Bunaken National Park with an area of 750 square kilometres is located in front of Manado, capital of the province Utara in the north-east of Sulawesi.
You can reach Manado and his international airport Sam Ratulangi quickly and without problems via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Therefore, there are many dive-center and resorts in all price ranges in the national park and around Manado.
Between the islands of Bunaken, Siladen and the volcanic island of Manado Tua, the sea is very deep by sometimes very strong currents, depending on the tides.
The steep walls in front of the islands, but also diving in the shallow water in front of Manado offer fantastic motifs, especially in the macro range. There are over 600 different coral species and more than 3,000 other species, including many frogfish, ghostpipes and a lot of different nudibranches.
Since you have to pay for entrance, the national park is effectively protected by ranger-patrols, dynamite fishing is a thing of the past.
You can also combine your stay on Bunaken with a trip to the Lembeh-Strait and its bizarre and unique marine life.
It’s also nice to visit the Tangkoko National Park or Tomohon with the amazing market. The volcanoes Lokon and Mahawu are still active, and you can climb the Mahawu without guide in 90 minutes.
