The beautiful Maratua Atoll is located about 60 kilometres eastern of Kalimantan in the Celebes Sea.
The journey to this remote destination is very difficult and possible via Balikpapan to Berau.
By using the speed boat down the river you reach the atoll after a few hours and you will rewarded for the exertion.
However, the remoteness of this atoll is not cheap. We lived few years ago in the Nabucco Island Resort, which is beautifully situated nearby the channel of the Maratua-Atoll. It's a very nice place to relax between your dives.
For divers, the isolated location is really fantastic. The reefs of Maratua are in excellent condition, the dive sites offers everything from rare macro-motifs to leopard sharks and manta rays.
You can find the manta rays at a cleaning station nearby the island Sangalaki. We were very lucky to dive and snorkel with 60-80 manta-rays during one day.
A trip to the island Kakaban with the Jellyfish Lake should not be missed. It’s very strange to snorkel within thousands of jellyfish.
A special highlight:
In the channel nearby the resort you can see a swarm Barracudas with thousands of animals.
